Do you want to make a vision board for your homestead? Do you know what it is? It is a visual representation of the goals and dreams you wish to achieve on your homesteading or self-sufficiency journey.
It is a way of seeing where you are going and what you wish to accomplish in order to successfully set goals and make a plan for the year.
Every homesteader will tell you how important it is to have goals and a written plan before you start your journey in homesteading. Starting with a vision board is a great way to express those dreams.

Later you can transform those dreams into goals, those goals into plans, and those plans into reality.
This vision board is an excellent way to start planning both short-term and long-term goals for your homestead. Every homesteader should make one before planning out their year.
In this post, I am going to explain why you should have one and even walk you through step by step how to make a vision board personalized for your own homestead.
What is a Vision Board?
A vision board is a visual representation. It shows your goals and dreams and is a collection of images that represent concrete items or ideas you wish to have at some point.
It is a way for you to portray the future of your homestead and what you want it to look like. Everything you dream of having on and for your homestead should be represented on your board.
Do you want a huge farmhouse? How about chickens and goats? Put them on your board. What other things do you dream of? A barn, a silo, a big tractor, vegetable gardens, a food forest…put them on there too.
Vision boards aren’t just for homesteading either. They can be made to represent your life vision, a child’s room renovation, a project at work, and many more things. The possibilities are really endless.
Materials Needed
A vision board can be created digitally on your computer, or you can make a vision board with pictures placed on a poster board. You need to decide the best way to create one for your homestead.
Do you need to physically hang it where you can see it often? Or are you okay with digital images on your computer?
Before you sit down to make a vision board for your homestead you need to gather some common materials.
These may include:
- Poster Board or large paper to work and design on.
- Pictures printed out or cut out of magazines.
- Glue stick
- Other decorative elements, ie…stickers.
- Scissors
You can also Google “free vision board makers” on the internet.
How to Make a Vision Board
Now that you have all of your materials and decided whether to make a poster board or a digital board, you are ready to start being creative Follow the steps below to start designing your vision board.
Steps for Designing A Vision Board
Step 1: Make a list of everything you want for your homestead.
This list should include everything you can think of. You may include things like a barn or a chicken coop. Or maybe you want a farmhouse. Maybe a prepping pantry or a smokehouse is in the plans.
How about a vegetable garden or an herb garden? Anything you can think of, simply add it to your list.
Will everything you list or dream of that you put on your vision board become a written goal this year? Maybe and maybe not. The point is to put your dreams on that board where you can see them regularly.
How hard you are willing to work, and your timing to achieve those goals is up to you and what’s best for you and your homestead. You set your own limits here.
Keep in mind that these ideas and images are just a representation of your big dreams and goals, but they may not be feasible yet. Put them on there for future planning.
Step 2: Look for images to represent what you want.
This is the fun part! Go through images in magazines, newspapers, and even on the internet to find good images that represent what you want. Cut them or print them out.
I printed the images I wanted on Canva. I then glued them to my poster board.
Step 3: Start making a layout that allows all your pictures to be seen.
Lay your images out any way you see fit to visually give an overall picture of what you want. You can do these in a collage form, or in a structured way with labels and notes. The sky is the limit here. Be creative.
Step 4: Permanently place your images and decorate your board.
Now all that is left is to simply paste or position the images where you like them and add decorations to the board. You can put a border around the edge, add letters and stickers, or write in notes if you so choose.
Where to Place Your Vision Board
Once you make a vision board for your homestead you need to figure out the best place to put it. Did you make a digital board? If so, save the image as your computer desktop image. That way every time you turn your computer on you have something to remind you of your homestead dreams.
You can also print it out or take it to an office supply store and have it made into a poster. Now you can display your image on a wall where you are constantly inspired to see it.
Did you make a physical board? Even better. Just find a spot in your home or office to hang it.
Make sure it is where you can see it often to remind you of the goals you are working towards. I hung mine in my office since that is where I spend most of my time.
Keep in mind that this board you created is an inspiration for you. It will be a reminder of what you are working towards on your homesteading journey. It shows your dreams and your goals. So put it in a highly visible place.
Your new vision board will be used to set some goals for each year of your homesteading journey. Be creative and allow yourself to dream! The sky and your creativity are your only limits.
